Yerevan Police Promise to Provide Detained Belgian Man with Interpreter Today

Yerevan resident, Belgian activist Luc Wadewale who was charged on Monday under RA Criminal Code Article 258 Section 3 Paragraphs 1 and 2 (“hooliganism”) was moved to Mashtots police station at 11 am on Tuesday, Wadewale’s wife, Gayane Vardanyan, told Epress.am.

Vardanyan noted that she and her attorney were informed of the transfer at 5 pm, after visiting the holding cell for detainees. From there they went to Mashtots police station where officers initially denied that Wadawale was there.

“We went to the investigator; they said he’s not here. From there I called the Belgian embassy and said your citizen is lost. When they heard that at the police station they immediately said that my husband is on the first floor. After that they accepted only the food that I took, then later the investigator also handed over Luc’s medication which he initially refused to do,” she said.

According to her, then arriving at the station was the long-awaited interpreter, who was sent by the complainant, the school principal.

“Wadewale, naturally, refused this interpreter, and the police promised that tomorrow [Wednesday] they will provide him with an interpreter and finally Wadewale will be able to communicate with his attorney and understand why they have been keeping him imprisoned for two days now already,” Vardanyan summed up.
