Several Historic, Cultural Monuments Destroyed by Idjevan Resident

An unidentified person broke the right hand of the historically and culturally significant “Awakening” monument erected in an Idjevan city park, according to a call made by the municipality to local police on Dec. 9.

Later, it became known that Martun Ghalumyan, 51, threw a rock at the statue’s hand, breaking it, then threw the piece in Aghstev (Aghstafa) River.

An investigation determined that Ghalumyan also broke the left hand of a statue of Eva and the engraved snake in the same park in May, then on Aug. 17 and Nov. 13, he removed the sword and balance scales decorating the doors the Church of St. Nerses Shnorhali (“the Gifted”) with a kitchen knife.
