No Significant Increase in Price of Foodstuffs in Armenia Ahead of the Holidays: Official

The State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition of the Republic of Armenia ahead of the holidays has been monitoring the foodstuffs market and determined that there have been no significant changes in the price of goods, said Commission chief Artak Shaboyan, speaking to journalists in Yerevan today.

“The Commission is studying the companies with a dominant position in the market and supervising the pricing policies of major supermarkets Yerevan City, Nor Zovk, Star, SAS and Fresh. We contacted everyone and cautioned them —  to avoid violations as much as possible these days,” he said.

Journalists pointed out that, nevertheless, there have been price increases, citing in particular the price of eggs which went up from 60 to 65 drams per egg (equivalent to $0.16 to $0.17 USD) — that is, about a 10% increase.

Shaboyan, however, asserted that the cost of one egg is not 65 but 62 drams, which cannot be considered a significant price increase. He once again insisted that he’s referring to noticeable, substantial price increases, which the Commission did not find.
