French President Nicolas Sarkozy intends to invite all European countries to adopt a law criminalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide, reports 1news.az, citing Turkey’s the Hurriyet.
The French leader has reportedly suggested a framework agreement among all EU countries for a law criminalizing genocide denial. The article recalls that during Germany’s presidency of the European Union, EU countries adopted a convention against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, as well as the criminalization of denial of the Holocaust.
France is now expected to also include criminalization of denial of the Armenian Genocide on the EU agenda, thus linking it to the Holocaust. Reportedly, though France has taken steps in this direction, other European countries have not yet responded to Sarkozy’s proposal.
