Canada’s national men’s soccer team will meet Armenia in a friendly Feb. 29 in Cyprus, the Canadian Soccer Association announced Tuesday.
The match — a first-ever meeting between the two countries — falls on the first FIFA international date of 2012.
Armenia had five wins, two ties and three losses in Euro 2012 qualifying, falling just short of a berth in the European tournament scheduled later this year.
“Armenia had a very good run before the team was eliminated,” said Canadian head coach Stephen Hart in a statement.
Hart expects to rely on European-based players for the match.
Armenia is currently ranked 45th in the FIFA world rankings, but failed to reach the upcoming European championship. Canada is ranked 74th.
For Canada, the game will serve as an early tune-up for the third round of regional qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup which begins in June.
