Serop Der-Boghossian, an Armenian-American businessman sentenced to 15 years in prison on pedophilia charges, underwent surgery Monday morning at the Mikaelyan Institute of Surgery in Yerevan.
Speaking to Yerkir Media, Mikaelyan Institute of Surgery deputy director Onik Melkonyan mentioned that the surgery commenced at 11:10 am and lasted about 3 hours. The patient is in stable condition.
“Our diagnosis was correct: there was another tumor in the cecum region. When he underwent surgery in the US, the tumor was removed and the small intestine was connected to the large intestine at the transverse section. Another tumor developed there, which was removed and the intestines reconnected,” said Melkonyan.
The doctor mentioned that Der-Boghossian is in intensive care, but most likely on Tuesday he will be moved to a regular hospital room. When asked when the patient can be discharged, Melkonyan said, “Usually these types of patients, if no complications arise — we keep them for 10–12 days. Then we can discharge them.”
The doctor also said surgery went very well and most likely there won’t be any complications.
Recall, Der-Boghossian, 70, late last year was convicted of “coercing” local underage boys to have sex with him. Der-Boghossian, whose Metal Prince company is the small northern Armenian town of Akhtala’s main employer, was later taken to hospital because of an intestinal impasse.
