Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has gone to Tehran for a two-day visit, during which the Turkish leader is expected to discuss Iran’s nuclear development program and the situation in Syria with Iranian leaders, RFE/RL reports.
Erdogan arrived in Iran on Mar. 28 and is scheduled to meet with Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and Majlis (parliament) speaker Ali Larijani.
Erdogan told Turkish media his main focus in talks with Iranian officials would be the situation in Syria, Turkey’s southern neighbor.
Erdogan said ahead of his trip to Tehran that some 17,000 Syrian refugees have crossed the border into Turkey, which he said meant Turks “cannot be spectators” of events in the volatile Middle Eastern country.
