Mine Explodes, Killing 25-Year-Old Army Officer and Injuring 3 Others

Chief of the field engineer company, captain Gevorg Mnatsakanyan was fatally injured when a mine exploded at around 8:30 pm on Oct. 16 near a military post at Armenia’s northeastern border. The 25-year-old captain was called to military service by the Gavar Military Commissariat and had been serving in the army since 2005, according to a RA Ministry of Defense statement [AM]. No other details have been provided.

Taken to the Central Clinical Military Hospital in Yerevan with varying degrees of injuries were senior lieutenant Garush Hambartsumyan (his condition is fair), compulsory military conscript Narek Hakobyan (his condition is satisfactory), and contract serviceman Edgar Harutyunyan (condition is fair).

An investigation is underway.
