Appeal of Family Protesting Outside President’s Office and Removed on Day of Putin’s Visit Rejected

Court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork Marash Administrative Districts of Yerevan Judge Gagik Poghosyan today rejected the joint appeal of Etchmiadzin resident Heghine Makaryan and head of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor office Artur Sakunts.

The applicants were asking the court to annul the police decision to refuse to launch criminal proceedings. The plaintiffs asked a criminal case to be launched in connection with police employees forcibly removing Ashot Khudoyan, Heghine Makaryan, and their young children, who were holding a sit-in outside the Armenian presidential palace, police unlawfully entering the family's home, and the disappearance of their mobile phone and 20,000 AMD (about $48 USD).

The Khudoyan family was removed from the sidewalk across the street from the president's residence at around 6:15 am on December 2, 2013, the day of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Yerevan, and were under police surveillance for about a day afterwards.
