US Embassy Yerevan condemns Armenian Church Destruction in Syria

Yesterday, the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan released a statement in strongly condemning the destruction of the Armenian Church in Deir Ez-zor, Syria.

They stated that, “this senseless act of destruction demonstrates yet again the utter disregard the terrorist organization ISIL has for the rich religious and cultural heritage of the Middle East.”

The embassy cited their Secretary of State John Kerry, who stated that ISIL systematically committed abuses in regards to human rights and international law and is a global terrorist threat. Due to the threat, the United States urges the international community to contribute to the strengthening of the “united effort to degrade and destroy ISIL.”

The official status of the church and memorial was questioned by some experts due to the lack of evidence proving its destruction. Today, Aztag daily released a photo of the church and its surrounding complex in ruins.
