Armenian NGO Demands Criminal Case for Vosku Shuka Owner’s Behavior

Today, the “Civil Society Institute” NGO presented a report to the police department and Armenia’s General Prosecutor regarding the recent incidents with the Vosku Shuka (Gold Market) owner Vagharsh Abrahamyan, said the NGO.

In their application, the NGO representatives stressed that on September 25, “Zhoghovurd” daily released video-footage where Vagharsh Abrahamyan circles the market and demands his assistants to “throw outside” tables which do not have merchants standing in front of them. In other interviews, Abrahamyan confirmed that he “punished” those merchants who attended the protest in front of the Armenian government building.

The “Civil Society Institute” NGO qualifies the incident as a violation of basic human rights; freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. Despite the media’s coverage and the raising of the issue, the police, since September 25, have not opened a criminal case.

“Therefore, the Civil Society Institute demands that, the above mentioned conduct should be adequately assessed and measures should be taken within the borders of jurisdiction, in addition to the opening of a criminal case,” concludes the NGO’s report.
