In recent days, news has been circulating about the commanders of the Russian military base in Gyumri planning to celebrate a Russian church holiday Maslenitsa (last week before Great Lent) on February 22, which has made many Gyumri residents outraged, writes Zhoghovurd daily.
The daily notes that the Avetisyan family’s 40th day after death also falls on February 22nd, and for the Russians to conduct a joyous event on that day is unacceptable. According to the circulating news, the local authorities are concerned about the issue, however, they are afraid to appeal to the Russian commanders.
The municipalities press and public relations division had informed the paper that the Avetisyan family’s 40th day falls on February 21st and not on the 22nd, while the municipality is not certain as to what events will be taking place at the Russian base on February 22. In any event, the municipality sees no reason to be concerned and or approach the Russian base’s leadership over the issue.
The daily also tried to reach the Russian military base’s press service employee Andrey Dobrolyubov, in order to confirm the Russian side’s intentions, however the press service’s phone was continually busy.
