Arsen Ghazaryan, President of the Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen (Employers) of Armenia (UMB(E)A), revealed on Thursday to local “Haykakan Zhamanak” daily that currently there are plans to build a new, more capacious pipeline transporting natural gas from Iran to Armenia.
Answering the daily's question as to why Armenia does not negotiate with Iran over gas for domestic consumption, the official said: “There will be time for that, too. See, there are already talks for building a second larger Iran-Armenia pipeline.”
To date, “Haykakan Zhamanak” writes, there has been no hint of such a program; however, Ghazaryan claims he has taken part in a several intergovernmental discussions, and the “new Iran-Armenia gasline project has been mentioned.”
“It's noteworthy since the current Iran-Armenia pipeline is used only in 20-25% of its capacity,” the daily concludes.
