Suspect in Murder of Armenian Psychic on Hunger Strike Over Arrest Extension

Mushegh Mkhitaryan, a Yerevan man who is charged with the murder of Armenian psychic Ani Majnunyan, has gone on a hunger strike at Nubarashen prison to protest the investigator's decision to extend his arrest for another 2 months, Mkhitaryan's lawyer, Marine Farmanyan, told Epress.am Tuesday.

On January 29, Farmanyan said, the investigator motioned to extend Mkhitaryan's arrest, claiming that expert advice still had to be obtained as part of the investigation. Namely, officials have yet to receive the results of the forensic psychological and psychiatric examination.

“I've urged Mkhitaryan to stop the hunger strike. Harming his health won't solve anything,” the lawyer told Epress.am.

Note, psychic Ani Majnunyan was murdered in Yerevan on August 5, 2015. Mushegh Mkhitaryan faces murder and assault charges pursuant to the 8th paragraph of the second part of Article 104 of the RA Criminal Code. The accused has pleaded not guilty to the crimes.
