Dozens Rally in Yerevan in Support of Jailed Oppositionist (Video)

European structures display an oddly cordial attitude and double standards towards the ruling regime in Armenia which keeps violating human rights. As a result, the country is facing a deepening human rights crisis and democratic regression, New Armenia opposition movement member Varuzhan Avetisyan said during a Tuesday rally in front of the office of the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia.

Several dozen demonstrators condemned today a Yerevan district court's decision not to grant bail to jailed New Armenia member Gevorg Safaryan who was arrested on New Year's Eve during a scuffle with law enforcement officers and charged with violence against police.

The rally, Varuzhan Avetisyan said, was held with the purpose of delivering the assessments and statements by Human Rights Watch and International Federation for Human Rights regarding Safaryan's arrest. The human rights organizations have, in particular, called on Armenia's law enforcement authorities to release the oppositionist from his “unjustified” arrest.
