Appeal Court Refuses Bail to Former Armenian Conscript

Armenia's Appeal Court refused to grant bail to former conscript Sargis Sahakyan, who is being held in pre-trial custody in a Shushi prison for allegedly committing self-harm in an attempt to get himself exempted from military service.

Speaking to Epress.am, Sahakyan's sister, Liana Sahakyan, said her brother hasn't fully recovered yet after having undergone four surgeries on his leg, and “it's impossible to provide him with sufficient treatment in prison.”

Appeal Court Judge Grisha Melik-Sargsyan, however, refused to release the former soldier on bail, claiming that Sahakyan is being properly cared for by prison officials.
