According to official statistics, the number of scientists in Armenia rises year after year as authorities keep generously handing out academic degrees, Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper reports, comparing the number of individuals who've received doctoral and candidate degrees over the last years.
In 1994, a total of 103 people in Armenia received doctorates and candidate degrees. Over the following years, this number grew rapidly: in 1995, 152 people became doctors and candidates of sciences; in 1996 – 196 people; in 1997 – 247, etc. In 2013, 421 doctoral and candidate degrees were handed out; in 2004 – 481; in 2005 – 475. In 2009, the figure rose to 568 and decreased again in 2012 to 495. In 2013, the total number of candidates and doctors stood at 610; in 2014 – at 594, and in 2015 -at 593.
“And this happens in a country, where the low level of science and 'meager financial resources” is an issue that is widely discussed and debated… Meanwhile, the number of scientists keeps growing and growing,” the paper notes.
