Armenian Villagers Protest Over Non-Payment of Money Allocated for New Housing

21 families of the village of Lenughi in Armenia's Armavir province have been living in 4th degree emergency buildings for nearly a decade; 4 years ago, the local residents claim, the government allocated funds for purchasing new apartments for them, but authorities have yet to actually give them the money.

Several dozen Lenughi villagers gathered today outside the Government offices in Yerevan to protest against “the unbearable conditions” their children have to live in.” “Our kids are constantly cold, they are always ill,” the protesters complained.

“They've been lying to us for 4 years. Two of the buildings are completely unsafe and unfit to live in. It's impossible to even stay inside when it's raining; most of the rainwater seems to be getting into our apartments,” 27-year-old protester Mkrtich Saharyan told our reporter, adding that the residents of one of the emergency buildings have already been given the government-allocated money.

The rest of the families, Saharyan went on, have appealed to Armavir governor Ashot Ghahramanyan and to government officials on multiple occasions but haven't managed to get any specific answers. “I met with the governor 4 days ago; he told me we'd soon be given the money. He said they had initiated a priority program to allocate the money to us in January. But they've been saying the same thing for years…”
