The authority conducting the proceedings into the death of Armavir prison inmate Anzor Karapetyan on January 4, 2016, has for months been disregarding a motion filed by his relatives’ lawyer with a request to determine whether the penitentiary had performed all its statutory obligations to preserve Karapetyan’s life when in prison.
“The motion was filed back in September, but I have yet to receive any response. I sent another appeal on Wednesday to be informed of the steps the authorities have taken to date,” lawyer Ani Chatinyan said in a conversation with Epress.am today.
Anzor Karapetyan, as previously reported, participated in a fight on December 21, 2015 in the Armenian town of Armavir. He then turned himself in to the police and was arrested on the spot. On January 3, a court ruled to send Karapetyan to Armavir jail. The next day, prison officials handed the young man’s body over to his relatives, saying that he had committed suicide.
