On the ninth anniversary of March 1, 2008, opposition Armenian National Congress party held a rally on Yerevan’s Freedom Square to commemorate the victims of the deadly post-election clashes. The demonstrators then proceeded to march toward the Alexander Myasnikyan statue near which the bloody events had taken place.
On March 1st, 2008, early in the morning, Armenian riot police and military forces were called in to disperse the mass protests against electoral fraud by supporters of unsuccessful presidential candidate Levon Ter-Petrosyan. They used excessive force and violence to disperse a peaceful opposition camp site in Freedom Square. The clashes left 10 people dead and many more wounded on the streets of central Yerevan. To date, relevant criminal proceedings have not been completed, no one has been convicted or charged with the murders.
