Monitors Say Representatives of Non-Governmental Forces Pressured Ahead of Parliamentary Elections

Out of the 2.564.244 citizens registered to vote at the April 2 parliamentary elections in Armenia, 31.993 do not have a date of birth mentioned, while for 2755 people there is no exact address of residence, Transparency International Anti-Corruption Center (TIAC) head Varuzhan Hokotyan said in a news conference on Wednesday, presenting the findings of their pre-election monitoring.

“In the official voter list published by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), 2755 people do not have an exact address mentioned; they have their street listed, but no city or region or apartment,” Hoktanyan said.

According to the TIAC head, since the official start of the election campaign one week ago, there have already been 14 reported instances of pressure against representatives of non-governmental forces and their family members.

“The monitors have also recorded instances of pressure against teachers and health workers who have been obliged [by authorities] to bring in a certain number of votes during the elections. There have been 8 reported pressure cases against school and kindergarten headmasters in Gyumri, Artashat, Kapan, Hrazdan and Yerevan,” Hoktanyan added.
