A director of an Armenian customs brokerage services company and the head of the Bavra checkpoint on the Armenian-Georgian border were arrested on May 25 as part of a criminal investigation into bribery involving customs officials of Armenia’s State Revenue Committee, the office of the Armenian Prosecutor General reported on Friday.
Law enforcement officers, the official statement said, received data that officials of the customs service under the State Revenue Committee received bribes from directors and employees of a number of organizations, as well as individuals, through staff members of a customs brokerage services company in return for clearing their goods through customs at tariffs lower than those prescribed by law.
“Based on evidence gathered, the General Department on Combating Organized Crime of the RA Police has launched a criminal case in relation to reception of bribes, giving a bribe and mediation in bribery,” the Prosecutor General’s office said, without revealing the names of those arrested.
