Yerevan Student Continues Hunger Strike After Friend Diagnosed With Pneumonia

Yuri Avagyan, a student who together with a friend went on a hunger strike on December 18 as a protest against the abolishment of military deferments, has refused to be hospitalized for his newly-diagnosed pneumonia, For the Development of Science students initiative member Vahan Kostanyan told Epress.am on Thursday.

“Yura was taken to a hospital last night, but as far as I know, he has refused hospitalization, preferring instead to continue his treatment at home,” Kostanyan said.

According to him, the other hunger-striking student, Davit Petrosyan, does not currently have any serious health issues: “I saw Davit today for a couple of minutes; he looked a little pale but seemed to be fine otherwise. He has been examined by doctors; they said his heart rate is  a little faster than normal. But other than that, he’s fine.” Kostanyan added that no member of the initiative was currently planning to join Petrosyan’s strike.
