Anna Hovsepyan, a 25-year-old woman from the Achajur village in Armenia’s Tavush province who was last year sentenced to 3 years in prison for having allegedly shared marijuana with her friend Gevorg Melikbekyan, motioned to the Court of Appeal on Monday to summon Melikbekyan to testify in court.
Recall, the 25-year-old insisted at an earlier appeal hearing that the marijuana had actually belonged to her friend Melikbekyan who threatened to kill the woman if she refused to take the blame. According to Melikbekyan, the woman added, she – a mother of two – would easily be able to avoid jail time.
“I want Gevorg to come here and tell you what he has told me, that he was actually coerced to say [that the marijuana belonged to me]. I want to ask him who he was coerced by and why,” Hovsepyan told the court. The woman’s motion has been granted, and Melikbekyan is scheduled to appear in court on May 2.
