Armenian Opposition Enters Liberty Square in Yerevan

After holding a rally outside the Matenadaran (Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts) today, the Armenian National Congress (HAK) decided to enter Liberty Square, which until then was cordoned by police.

After negotiations between HAK coordinator Levon Zurabyan and RA Deputy Police Chief Sashik Afyan, the wall of police stepped aside and demonstrators entered Liberty Square. Note, this is the first time opposition supporters have gathered in the square since the events of Mar. 1, 2008, when mass protests following contested presidential elections resulted in violence and use of force by law enforcement officials that left 10 people dead and many more injured.
