Armenians on Facebook have created an event page called “Free citizens for free citizens!” in which they call on members of the public to join them at a protest outside the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Armenia on Dec. 10 at 12 pm, demanding the release of Russian opposition leaders and activists, permission to hold peaceful demonstrations and marches, and the end of harassment of freedom of speech.
“As in many countries that are on the path to democracy but have authoritarian regimes, so too in Russia, the last election showed how helpless people are under such conditions. We have seen what happens when they try to organize a protest against rigged elections and illegal processes in the country.
“We, a group of people in Armenia who have been fighting against similar phenomena, express our outrage at the arrests of opposition figures who stand for democratic process, regardless of where it occurs — in Moscow, Cairo, Minsk or Mogadishu,” reads the accompanying text on the social networking site.
