Armenia's Domestic Situation Not a Cause for War: Opinion
The domestic political situation in conflicting countries is not a sufficient condition for starting a war. The cost at which the status quo is maintained in the region must be observed, said Heritage Party MP Stepan (Styopa) Safaryan, speaking to Epress.am and commenting on a statement by Liberal Party of Armenia leader Hovhannes Hovhannisyan. Recall that Hovhannisyan, a member of the opposition bloc Armenian National Congress, had said that if there is no overturn in government (through early elections), then there will be war in Armenia in 2011. "If there are serious geopolitical changes in the region, then it can be said the possibility of resuming military operations will increase; however, in my opinion, there are yet no grounds for such situations," he said. According to the parliamentarian, the Armenian authorities and the non-parliamentary opposition have always tied the likelihood of war to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. "It's true, the conflicting parties' internal democratic problems have their role, and authoritative governments more easily turn to adventure, but let me disagree with the view of the likelihood of war resuming only through internal processes," added Safaryan.
