Armenia’s General Prosecutor’s Office has granted the petition filed by a group of National Assembly MPs for the release of Artur Sargsyan, the man who drove through a police cordon last summer to deliver food to the opposition gunmen occupying a Yerevan police station and was subsequently jailed on suspicion of aiding the armed group.
According to a statement issued by the Office on Monday, General Prosecutor Artur Davtyan has today met with lawmakers Edmon Marukyan, Nikol Pashinyan, Heghine Bisharyan, Mikayel Manukyan, Levon Zurabyan, and Aram Manukyan to familiarize them with their rights and obligations as guarantors for Sargsyan’s release. After the meeting, the group of MPs went to visit Sargsyan at the Convicts’ Hospital where he has been held since going on a hunger strike in early February.
Soon after, Pashinyan went live on his Facebook page to announce that five lawmakers have agreed to stand as guarantors for Sargsyan’s release and have already paid 500 000 drams each for his bail. Sargsyan, who will be set free within the next few hours, has agreed to end his hunger strike after the release, the MP added.
