Armenian Grandmaster Holding his Own in Dutch Chess Tournament

Armenian Grandmaster Levon Aronian with black yesterday drew (tied) with India’s Viswanathan Anand at the Tata Steel chess tournament held in the Dutch city of Wijk aan Zee from Jan. 14 to 30.

Though Aronian didn’t win, the 8th round can be considered quite successful for him. The leading player thus far, Hikaru Nakamura (US), who was one point ahead of Aronian, lost to Magnus Carlsen (Norway). Nakamura resigned on his 37th, when checkmate could only be stopped by massive material losses, according to the Tata Steel official website.

Anand and Nakamura once again share the lead in the field of fourteen, with 5.5 points each, followed by Aronian, Carlsen, Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France), all sharing third place with 5 points each.
