Armenia’s authorities can be ousted in even worse ways than the governments of Tunisia and Egypt, said Heritage Party MP Stepan (Styopa) Safaryan.
“There are very interesting developments taking place in the world and in the Middle East: Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain and so on. They are moving from one country to another in a domino effect,” he said.
According to the parliamentarian, the lack of justice in the country becomes “chronic” and the government doesn’t respond to the issues, so the public explodes. “Experience shows that such dictatorial regimes don’t last for long.
“Armenia too is one part of the Middle East. And if the government is afraid of something, it’s right to be afraid. No declaration or agreement is going to help,” he said.
The most recent example, according to Safaryan, was Operation Koltso (“Ring”) in Gyumri yesterday.
“Gyumri yesterday was similar to Cairo. Yesterday, they should have come and heard what thousands of people in Gyumri were saying about the police, about their violations and unlawful activities. I felt sorry for police yesterday, I told them they’re the ones in the blockade and they need to be released,” he said.
The Heritage Party will continue to support people with various civic complaints, Safaryan added.
On the topic of the issue with cars in Armenia with Georgian plates, the deputy said they intend to get in touch with the Prosperous Armenia party and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) and it’s possible that they’ll call a special meeting next week on this matter.
