Armenia Deputy Police Chief Hopes New Uniform will Increase Trust in Police

The 2010–2011 police reforms program has 11 main directions. Deputy Head of RA Police Artur Osikyan shared some details of the reforms program with journalists in Yerevan today.

“We’re far from the thought that at the end of 2011 or 2012 we’ll have that police which we want to see or which the team currently working in the police force really strives for, which basically implements this entire program of reforms,” he said.

Osikyan stressed the importance of the inclusion of a special civil service in the police force.

“Since Mar. 15, a special civil service was introduced in police, as a result of which the 450 employees in our force are already considered special civil servants, and they don’t wear the uniform that regular police officers wear while carrying out police functions. We’re talking about the passport and visa department, the finance-budget department,” he said.

Osikyan further informed the press that the police uniform will again be modified since police currently still sport the uniform inherited from the Soviet era, which also apparently hinders mobility.

The deputy police chief hoped that the new uniform will increase (public) trust in police.
