Falsely Advertised Kiwis Result in Proceedings Against Yerevan Supermarket

The State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition of the Republic of Armenia made a decision on May 24 to issue proceedings against local company Fresh for the possible violation of 6 laws.

The chain of supermarkets of the same name owned by the company occasionally offers discounted merchandise as part of deals to its customers. In a flyer advertising sales from May 4 to 17, Fresh noted that 3 kiwis were being sold for 375 drams (a little over $1 US), but a customer was made to pay 510 drams (about $1.38 US) for 3 kiwis purchased on May 10.

According to a press release issued by the Commission today, the incident was published by local newspaper Iravunq (“Right”) in an article on May 20, 2011, titled “Abnormal Kiwis from Fresh,” where it was stated that apart from kiwis, a number of other goods were falsely advertised as being cheaper than they actually were.

The Commission intends to further investigate this supermarket chain while proceedings are underway.
