Armenian defense minister Seyran Ohanyan (pictured) is a patriotic and hard-working man, RA Police Chief Alik Sargsyan told reporters outside the Armenian government building on Thursday. Referring to Aghasi Abrahamyan, an 18-year-old conscript serving in an army unit near Nagorno-Karabakh who died shortly after being hospitalized with serious injuries late on Friday, he asked those present, “If something like that happened, why do you absolutely want to connect it with Seyran Ohanyan?”
According to the head of police, it’s not necessary to raise issues having to do with the army in the streets.
“Why have you decided to raise this issue on the street? Perhaps that issue [should be raised] somewhere else, at state agencies… have you tried to meet with Seyran Ohanyan?” he asked members of the press.
When reporters responded that Ohanyan is avoiding such a meeting, the police chief promised to speak to the defense minister on this issue.
“I will tell him now that the people have a complaint, that they want to meet. He has so much intellect, so many possibilities, and he is so patriotic, that he can respond to all your questions — without hiding anything. In my opinion, he will denounce this phenomenon more so than any of you standing here. I don’t think that anyone will be forgiven if, as you say, a murder took place. I don’t know what happened at Yeghikner [“deers,” the name of the military unit where Abrahamyan was stationed]; I can’t make an irresponsible statement,” he said.
Note that Seyran Ohanyan was not present at Thursday’s government meeting.
