During the first 7 months of this year, there were 62,000 more people leaving Armenia by plane than there were arriving. With respect to motor vehicle transport, in the first 7 months of the year, there were 25,000 more departing the country than arriving, reports local daily Haykakan Jamanak (“Armenian Times”).
Both figures were obtained from official statistics: the number of those arriving and leaving by plane was published by the General Department of Civil Aviation of the Republic of Armenia, while the number of those arriving and leaving by motor vehicle were obtained from the system that records border crossings through the automated RA Border Management Information System (BMIS). So it is that this year, the number of those leaving Armenia exceeds those arriving by 87,000.
No doubt that a significant portion of these individuals are emigrating Armenia citizens, reports the paper, noting that if the number of those departing continues to increase at this rate, the number of those emigrating might reach 100,000 by year end.
According to official figures, 175,600 people left Armenia between 2000–2010 and did not return, 78,000 of these in the past 3 years.
