Armenia is living in an election campaign period, when each political entity is trying to be sold, said vice-chair of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), MP Galust Sahakyan, speaking to journalists in the Armenian capital today.
“I consider the political situation, as a pre-election year, to be very positive. If it continues this way, we’ll have great elections,” he said.
Sahakyan also weighed in on the fact that all free and paid toilets in the vicinity of Liberty Square (where opposition supporters have been staging round-the-clock rallies since Friday) are being closed.
He noted that to journalists who asked him about this matter yesterday, he said buckets could be distributed to the campers (to be used as toilets).
Sahakyan opined that operating or closing toilets is a person’s “business right.”
“If they’re holding rallies and people are no longer working, let them bring portable toilets. How are they bringing tents? Tomorrow or the day after they’ll say, bring us food,” he said.
Asked by Epress.am why the roads are closed for inter-city transport, the MP said, “I don’t know why they close the roads. I condemn this phenomenon. They must be subject to accountability within the scope of the law,” he said.
On the Armenian National Congress’ demand for snap elections, the Republican MP said that “snap elections as an ideology doesn’t exist.”
If they asked him, Sahakyan added, then he wouldn’t allow the rallies in Liberty Square to go on “for even another day.”
“The police has to not disperse [ralliers] but assert its authority. What does it mean to ‘disperse’ [i.e. to disseminate] — is it a seed or what?” he declared.
