Supporters of the opposition bloc the Armenian National Congress (HAK) spent their 5th consecutive night camped out at Liberty Square in Yerevan in a move aimed at putting more pressure on authorities.
As previously, HAK leader Levon Ter-Petrossian visited the square in the middle of the night, walking around the tents and speaking with activists.
The forcible dispersal of a similar tent camp set up by the Ter-Petrossian-led opposition in Liberty Square in February 2008 led to vicious clashes elsewhere in central Yerevan that left ten people dead and more than 200 others injured, RFE/RL’s Armenian service reported.
The start of the latest HAK campaign was immediately followed by the simultaneous closure of numerous cafes and restaurants surrounding the square as well as all nearby public toilets.
