Couples in Azerbaijan will now have to present a clean bill of health before they can tie the knot, said National Assembly (Milli Məclis) Social Policies Committee Chair, MP Hadi Rajabli at a press conference on Wednesday, reports 1news.az.
The committee chair said that it was also important for couples to have a health certificate before marriage.
“The blood condition thalassaemia is widespread in Azerbaijan. If carriers of the thalassaemia gene marry, there is a high probability that they will have a child suffering from thalassaemia. All this suggests the need for mandatory submission of a medical certificate before marriage,” he said.
