260 Died from AIDS in Armenia in Last 23 Years

From 1988 to Dec. 1, 2011, there have been 260 deaths from HIV/AIDS and 1,136 cases of HIV infection among citizens of the Republic of Armenia. The RA Ministry of Healthcare also notes that there are an estimated 2,500 people living with HIV in Armenia.

A number of events are planned to mark World AIDS Day in the country today. A march was organized in downtown Yerevan just before 2 pm, and later, an “awards ceremony” took place which recognized 6 categories of HIV/AIDS Advocates in 2011: local NGO/representative, international organization/representative, government institution/representative, public figure, cultural figure and mass media outlet or journalist. At 6 pm, the AIDS Advocacy Group is planning a public awareness event outside Moscow Cinema.
