Woman Who Attempted Suicide at Armenia Ombudsman’s Office has Cancer

Gyumri resident Anahit Vardanyan, who on Tuesday afternoon attempted suicide at the RA Human Rights Defender’s Office, is now in stable condition. The 64-year-old Gyumri resident had poisoned herself by drinking liquid peroxide, but her condition is now not life threatening and she is no longer vomiting blood, Dr. Ashkhen Ghazaryan, a doctor in the Armenia Republican Medical Center’s toxicology department, informed Epress.am earlier today.

“The woman with a chemical burn in her oral cavities who was admitted by our department took this measure because of several social problems. According to Anahit Vardanyan, to live is meaningless and she does not regret what she did.  The woman with pale skin who attempted suicide has cancer of the spine. She finds that she no longer has strength to overcome numerous problems,” described Dr. Ghazaryan.

The doctor asserted that Vardanyan was not mentally ill and she took her life knowingly.

“The detoxification treatment will last 7 to 10 days,” she said.

A statement issued by the RA Ombudsman’s office yesterday noted that it was the first time Vardanyan had filed a claim with the human rights office. In it, she listed several complaints, including the termination of social assistance payments, theft in her home and the investigation which resulted from this.
