‘I Will Always be in Politics’: MP Galust Sahakyan on Upcoming Elections, HHK and Businessmen in Parliament

The current state of politics in Armenia is active and stable, said Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) vice chair, head of the HHK parliamentary faction Galust Sahakyan, speaking to journalists in the capital today.

“Electoral developments are expected; the parties are searching — they’re trying to develop their strategies, to become more presentable to the people. I think the process is satisfactory overall. Political intrigues are not expected at this time,” he said.

Asked by a journalist at when political intrigues are to be expected, Sahakyan said to pay good attention to the electoral code — “at the time when the campaigning begins.”

Asked by the same journalist whether that’s how it’s written in the electoral code, he said: “I think that there’s a problem of understanding.”

To the question of whether he will be on the HHK proportional list in the parliamentary elections, he said, “If you have a great desire, I will be, and if you don’t, I will be. I more so think that I am in favor of [higher aspirations] — I will always be in politics.”

HHK hasn’t yet discussed its party list, he added.

Addressing the question of whether there will be businessmen in the new parliament, Sahakyan said the principle adopted by his party is those who are (politically) active and who consider their first job to be their parliamentary activities — regardless of whether they’re businessmen or not — will be in parliament.
