RA Prosecutor General nominee Gevorg Kostanyan said in parliament today that he is going to fight corruption and corrupt prosecutors.
There are no objective obstacles to implementing justice; all the obstacles are subjective. Neither closed border nor the geopolitical situation can interfere with the implementation of justice, said Kostanyan during his speech in parliament today. Recall, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan informed parliament about Kostanyan's nomination last week.
Kostanyan spoke about his activities as the military prosecutor for the last 2.5 years. As an important achievement, he mentioned a decrease in the number of deaths in the Armenian army, citing official figures: 43 deaths in 2010; 35 in 2011; 29 in 2012; and 13 in the first half of 2013.
According to the incumbent, this proves that effective means to counteract the cause of crime were implemented.
"The prosecutor who doesn't agree that there can be no room for corruption in the prosecution system soon will not have a place himself in the Prosecutor [General’s] Office. If I get the [general] prosecutor position, one of my most important goals will be to ensure that all are equal before the law," he said.
Furthermore, Kostanyan said no prosecutor should belong to a political party: "If they want to work in politics, let them get out of the [prosecution] system."
