Military Draftees in Gyumri Made to Wait Out in the Cold

The Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor office received a call that more than 50 young men called to mandatory military service and their relatives were kept waiting in freezing temperatures outside Gyumri's military commissariat since 9:30 am in order to undergo the required medical examination.

According to the statement issued by the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor office [AM], the families are not being provided with conditions to wait inside. "Military draftees and their accompanying relatives continue to experience treatment degrading to human dignity, while the relevant persons remain unpunished.

"Again, we demand the RA defense ministry to respect each military draftee's right and dignity, to set a clear schedule for military draftees to be present for a medical examination, and if impossible, then to ensure the necessary conditions for military draftees and their families," reads the human rights NGO's statement.

Recall, the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor office on Dec. 20 drew attention to another case of military draftees waiting out in the cold, this time at the Abovyan military commissariat.
