Yerevan Court Turns Away Appeal Seeking to Reopen Proceedings Against Police Officers

Arabkir and Kanaker-Zeytun district court, presided over by judge Rubik Mkhitaryan, denied on Tuesday the appeal filed by Nana Muradyan and Irina Ghazaryan, mothers of two Armenian soldiers who died during military service in 2010, that sought to overturn investigator's decision not to initiate criminal proceedings against police officers who used excessive force against the women in spring, 2015.

Speaking to Epress.am, the plaintiffs' lawyer, Haykuhi Harutyunyan, said it was noteworthy that the judge failed to provide any justification for the rejection. The mothers, for their part, announced their intention to re-submit their complaint.

On May 13, 2015, law enforcement officers forcibly removed five demonstrating parents, including the plaintiffs, from the sidewalk in front of the Armenian presidential residence. As a result of the police's violent actions, the two women sustained physical injuries; a criminal case was initiated and subsequently terminated by Armenian Special Investigation Service (SIS).
