261 employees of Yerevan’s idling Nairit chemical plant, who have not been paid their wages for the past five months, will receive a month’s salary by the end of this month, Vrezh Sargsyan, a plant worker, told Epress.am on Tuesday, after a conversation with Nairit bankruptcy case manager Karen Asatryan. According to Sargsyan, the official has promised that the rest of the money will be paid once they manage to sell some of the plant’s equipment.
“We told Asatryan that we would not organize any strikes or protest actions until the New Year; if, however, they fail to keep their part of the agreement, we will resume our demonstrations and start blocking roads again,” Sargsyan said.
He added, at the same time, that the protesting employees are still too hesitant to believe Asatryan’s assurance since their back wages are not a priority for the bankrupt company; “Even if they do manage to sell the equipment by February, they still have to pay the current month’s salary, then the benefits and allowances; so our wage arrears will naturally be pushed back yet again.”
