Penitentiary Officials Lying About Calling Together Doctors for Jailed Oppositionist, Lawyer Claims

The statement issued by the Penitentiary Department of Armenia’s Justice Ministry on January 15, according to which a group of doctors were called together for a consultation on Daredevils of Sasun member Hovhannes Harutyunyan’s health issues, is a misinformation, the jailed oppositionist’s lawyer, Hayarpi Sargsyan, told Epress.am on Tuesday.

“I want to stress that their information is false; they also said I was present at this consultation, which is also not true. [Harutyunyan] was looked at by a paramedic during a January 9 hearing at the Shengavit district court, and rather carelessly, I have to say,” the lawyer stated.

The statement by the public relations office of the Penitentiary Department says that on January 15, Hovhannes Harutyunyan‘s lawyer told the media that Harutyunyan had been “offered in prison to exercise with shattered bones and heal his leg in this manner.”

“In connection with the above-mentioned, the Penitentiary Department considers it necessary to clarify that a group of doctors, including one invited by Harutyunyan, were recently called together to examine [the prisoner], and they concluded that there was no need for surgical intervention: no bone-traumatic changes were detected.”

Meanwhile, according to Hayarpi Sargsyan, a doctor invited by her client took part in such a consultation back in April 2017; “A Dutch doctor invited by Harutyunyan and I took part in a consultation on April 12, 2017.”
