Authorities Demand Property Tax from Villager for Car Left in Artsvashen

Samvel Arakelyan, a native of the town of Chambarak in Armenia’s Gegharkunik province, has received a letter from the community administration, informing him that “in order to avoid further complications,” he must urgently pay a property tax of AMD 77 850 (more than $160) for his GAZ-69 car. The problem is that the car was left by Arakelyan in Artsvashen, which has been under the control of Azerbaijan for 26 years.

“My father had an old and faulty truck which was left in Artsvashen. Now the authorities demand that I pay property tax for it,” Samvel Arakelyan’s son, Artik Arakelyan, said in a conversation with Epress.am. “They should have sent this letter to Aliyev, not me.”

According to the man, representatives of the Chambarak administration have told the family “the debt is clearly visible” in their documents: “They told us to pay the debt to avoid any issues.”

Arakelyan said he did not intend to respond to the letter in any way, “because it is absurd.” “Now if they were to give me my truck back, I’d pay them tenfold,” he, however, promised.
