Garegin Chugaszyan Released from Prison

Garegin Chugaszyan, the Chairman of the “Founding Parliament”, was released on the evening of May 11. Chugaszyan has been on  hunger strike for the last 17 days.

Yesterday, MPs from the “Way Out” faction Ararat Mirzoyan (who has just been appointed First Deputy Prime Minster) and Lena Nazaryan presented a guarantee to change the preventive measure of Chugaszyan.

Earlier, in his conversation with us, Chugaszyan’s attorney Tigran Yegoryan said he was hopeful of his defendant’s release in course of the coming days once the Court of Appeal would discuss the matter of the change of his preventive measure.

Right after the release Chugaszyan went to Arshakunyats Avenue that by 22:30 had been blocked by the supporters of “Sasna Tsrer” group. They blocked the road after Judge Arshak Vardanyan had refused to change the arrest as a preventive measure of 11 members of the group.

Recall, that Chugaszyan who has been on hunger strike for 17 days, was arrested on April 23. Prior to that, he had been in underground. He is accused of organizing mass disorders on occasion of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide in 2015. At that point he was released on bail. Later on, however, the Investigative Committee considered it necessary to arrest him.
