Yerevan mayor Taron Margaryan met with representatives of the ad-hoc committee “Defending the Interests of Kiosk Owners,” who expressed their concerns regarding the demolition of kiosks in the Armenian capital. The mayor, in turn, discussed the goal of this process and the phased approaches. He stressed that resolving the matter of demolishing the temporary structures on Abovyan St. is a priority.
Taron Margaryan noted that agreements have been already been drawn up with the owners and that strip of Abovyan St. will soon return to its original appearance. The process will be followed by managing the matter of the 243 kiosks that are not operating and whose contracts have expired and are subject for demolition. At the same time, the newly elected Yerevan mayor noted that he won’t be looking into the demolition of those kiosks that are outside the downtown core.
Possible options in the plan to establish centers for small trade in different administrative districts in Yerevan is being discussed with Yerevan’s chief architect, and the municipality’s Trade and Services Department, he added.
“If the contracts of some kiosks today expire in 2015, it’s all the same — the problem will arise even then. In all the administrative districts, grouped areas will be established that will correspond to modern standards: they will be uniform, aligned with the city’s architectural image, also beneficial for kiosk owners,” he said, according to statement issued on Thursday by Yerevan City Hall.
